KOT vs Kitchen Display System: Which Is Right for Your Kitchen?
· 5 min read
A kitchen order ticket (KOT) carries an order from the counter or table to the kitchen. You can print it on paper or show it on a screen called a kitchen display system (KDS). Each works; the right choice depends on your volume and layout.
Printed KOTs
A thermal printer by each station prints a slip the moment an order is placed. It is simple, cheap and works even when a cook's hands are wet or busy.
- Low cost: a thermal printer per station
- Easy for staff to understand on day one
- Slips can be lost, smudged or pile up in a rush
- No live timing unless someone watches the clock
Kitchen display screen
A KDS shows tickets on a screen and moves them through stages such as New, Preparing and Ready. Timers highlight late orders and the front of house sees when food is ready.
- Live timers and status for every order
- No paper to lose and less waste
- Needs a screen or tablet in the kitchen and a steady connection
- Works best with station routing so each cook sees only their items
How to choose
A small cafe with one prep area can run well on a single printer. A multi-station kitchen, a busy QSR or a cloud kitchen taking aggregator orders usually benefits from a screen. Many restaurants start with printed KOTs and add a display later, so choose a POS that supports both.
