How the calculation works
Discount is taken off the item total first. Service charge, if any, is then added on the discounted amount, and GST is calculated on the discounted amount plus service charge. For tax-inclusive prices the calculator works backwards: taxable value = amount / (1 + rate).
GST on restaurant services depends on your registration and the applicable rate, and the rules change. Treat this as an estimate and confirm treatment with your chartered accountant.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is GST split into CGST and SGST?
- For a sale within one state, the GST rate is shared equally between the Centre (CGST) and the state (SGST). A 5% rate is shown as 2.5% CGST plus 2.5% SGST.
- Is service charge taxed?
- Service charge is generally treated as part of the value of the supply and attracts GST at the same rate. Confirm the treatment for your outlet with your accountant.
- Can my POS do this automatically?
- Yes. Tabla splits CGST and SGST on every bill and gives you a day-by-day Tax report you can export.
